Military Family Support

A "service child" is an individual whose parent or carer is currently serving, or has served at any point during the first 25 years of that person's life, in the regular armed forces or as a reservist. Ilchester Community Primary School (ICPS) benefits from a close relationship with the nearby RNAS Yeovilton military base. Recognising the unique needs of these students, ICPS has a dedicated Family Link worker, Mrs. Dickinson, who provides support specifically for military children and their families.

The influence of Armed Forces life permeates the entire ICPS community. Many pupils and staff members have direct connections as part of serving military families, as friends of military children, or as colleagues working alongside military families within the school. This shared experience fosters a unique understanding and camaraderie within the school environment. Furthermore, many students have lived in various locations across the UK and internationally, bringing a rich tapestry of lived experiences and perspectives to the school community.

ICPS is deeply committed to supporting its serving families throughout their children's educational journey at the school. The school aims to enhance these students' educational experience both academically and pastorally, providing valuable support whether a child is enrolled for a short term, a single academic year, or their entire primary school career. This dedication ensures that service children feel integrated and well-supported at ICPS.

The proximity of RNAS Yeovilton significantly enriches the learning environment at Ilchester Community Primary School. Many students from military families bring diverse perspectives and experiences into the classroom. ICPS actively strives to cultivate a nurturing and understanding atmosphere that acknowledges and addresses the specific challenges often faced by Service Premium children, ensuring they feel valued, supported, and included within the school community. Through collaborative initiatives and programs with RNAS Yeovilton, ICPS fosters a strong sense of community, celebrates diversity, and strengthens the vital bond between the military and the local civilian population, ultimately benefiting all students.

SSAFA (Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association)

We are proud to partner with SSAFA (Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association) to support our military families and enhance community engagement.

One of the highlights of our collaboration is the Annual Easter Egg Competition. This event encourages students to design and decorate their Easter eggs, showcasing their creativity while learning about Easter traditions. Local armed forces members serve as judges, reinforcing the connection between our school and the military community.

Prizes are awarded in various categories, celebrating all participants' hard work and imagination. This friendly competition fosters camaraderie amongst students and highlights the contributions of our military families.

Through our partnership with SSAFA and events like the Easter Egg Competition, Ilchester Community Primary creates a supportive environment for all students, ensuring every child feels valued and connected to our vibrant school community.
